The End of An Eye

„The End of An Eye“ lautet der Titel der zweiten Solo Show von Lea von Wintzingerode bei Jacky Strenz.
„Eye“ wie „I“ (Ich) und „Eye“ wie Auge – Sehen und Sein. Sehen als kollektive Praxis, ähnlich wie hören, wir hören und sehen gemeinsam. „The End of an Eye“ – in Anlehnung an den Titel des experimentellen Albums „The End of an Ear“ von Robert Wyatt aus dem Jahr 1970 – kann aber auch verstanden werden als der Eckwinkel eines Auges, aus dem heraus betrachtet, alles verschwimmt. Auf all das, was man eben nicht sieht, sehen kann, sehen will oder auch das man mehr sieht. Das, was vergraben ist, nicht sichtbar.
Lea von Wintzingerode kombiniert in ihren figurativen Gemälden Szenen und Ausschnitte, die teils auf persönlicher Erfahrung und teils auf kollektiver Erinnerung basieren, mit Portraits, welche sich auf Personen der Underground-Musik und Pop-Kultur als auch auf den Einfluss der écriture feminine bis in die Gegenwart beziehen.
Die Arbeiten von Lea von Wintzingerode reflektieren eine von extremem Individualismus geprägte Gesellschaft. Sie zeigen das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Innerlichkeit und der Rolle des Einzelnen als soziales Wesen, sowie das Streben nach Anerkennung sozialer, sexueller und ethnischer Unterschiede, und verhandeln so das permanente Neuerschaffen von sozialem Raum. Insofern kann „The End of An Eye/I“, also die Möglichkeit des finalen „Ichs“ ebenso als Utopie einer Abkehr des Individualismus hin zu einer Gemeinschaft verstanden werden.
“The End of An Eye” is the title of Lea von Wintzingerode’s second solo show with Jacky Strenz.
“Eye” as “I“ as well as “eye” – seeing and being. Seeing as a collective practice, similar to listening, we listen and see simultaneously. “The End of an Eye” – referring to the title of the experimental album “The End of an Ear” by Robert Wyatt, released in 1970 – can be understood as the corner angle of an eye, from which observed, everything blurs. On all that one just doesn’t see, can see, wants to see or even that one sees more. What is hidden, invisible.
In her figurative paintings, Lea von Wintzingerode combines scenes and excerpts which are based partly on personal experience and partly on collective memory with portraits that refer to certain characters of underground music and pop culture, as well as they give homage to the influence of écriture feminine up to the present.
Lea von Wintzingerode’s works reflect a society characterized by an extreme individualism. They show the conflict between inwardness and the role of the individual as a social being, as well as the striving for an unlimited recognition of social, sexual and ethnic differences, and thus negotiate the permanent re-creation of social space. In this regard, “The End of An Eye/I”, i.e. the possibility of the final “I”, can also be understood as an utopia of a turn from individualism towards community.
